. A light touch with the blender always seems to yield spectacular results. For this card, I blended several colors of brown paper, then added a bit of red and yellow to the pulp. A quick flick of the blender and presto -- instant Autumn.PulpPaperScissorshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049962307428356571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5514259821703507549.post-5352672629356786772014-10-10T10:09:00.000-07:002014-10-10T10:09:28.050-07:00Impressive, right?

By pressing string to just-made wet paper, then lining a straight sided can with that paper, I ended up with a nice design and a very smooth surface on my paper vase.

Arundhati Srimani, teacher extraordinaire, always accompanies the preschoolers on their field trip to my studio. After making sure that every child is perfectly happy with their own creation, Arun manages to make a sheet or two of her own paper. It looks like she has been saving up her papers from the last few field trips and finally had the time during the August break to make some cards.

Arun's love of nature permeates her classroom. There are plants, flowers, paintings, photographs, light tables covered with feathers and leaves. And the poetic words of children who have learned to embrace and observe the natural world. It's no surprise that Arun would create beautiful landscapes with her paper.

Thank you, Arun!PulpPaperScissorshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07049962307428356571noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5514259821703507549.post-63498111219228921982014-06-21T14:30:00.001-07:002014-06-21T14:30:22.628-07:00The Denim Papers

If you cut it up small enough and blend it long enough, denim turns into a wonderfully sticky, stringy pulp for recycled paper.

I like to think of denim as more of an accessory than a head-to-toe look. A blend of denim pulp and recycled paper pulp works best for me. Blender-ize the cut-up denim and the recycles paper separately, them pour both batches in the vat and swish vigorously to mix. Pull the sheet using the dip method.

Here are the results:

The texture is smooth and surprisingly light.
I want to cover a bottle with the grey/green sheet.

Speaking of head-to-toe denim, here's a fellow who can really pull it off.
For Christmas, my very favorite card. Like all my cards, this one was inspired by nature, sort of. In my botanical drawing class, I struggled with, well everything, but especially depicting light and shadow. With every exercise I thought how much easier it would be to make some paper, then use the paper to create a picture. And so I did.

In my Chicago neighborhood there is a year round population of Monk Parakeets. Their beautiful blue/green and yellow plumage is almost as loud as their squawk. It is still amazes me to see these tropical looking birds perched in a bare tree in the middle of winter.

This technique is very forgiving. You can move the pieces, overlap them. etc/

This takes a little time, but you can leave it and come back to it.

I'll bet this technique would work nicely with more subdued shades.

By mixing up green pulp, then adding some yellow paper and mixing again for just a few seconds, I was able to create this very summery field of grass and dandelions. I liked the effect so much I used it again to create the backyard scene in my picture book, "This Old Man."
